Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) is a technique that server-class computers use to both improve speed of on-disk storage and to improve reliability. Using multiple disks, the computer splits up and/or copies data across the disks so that if one of the disks breaks, no data is lost and the server doesn't crash. You will often hear storage described as RAID 0, RAID 1, etc. The number indicates the type of storage, not the number of hard drives.

In manufacturing, a recipe is a set of instructions that can be product or equipment specific. In Ignition a recipe usually refers to a system that will take a single input (like a recipe name or ID) and give multiple pieces of data (like temperature, fill level, etc.) in return. Often this means using a Transaction Group to fetch data from the database given that a recipe ID has changed in the PLC.

Using two copies of software or hardware to work together in order to minimize failure times. In Ignition, this means two installations on separate computers, connected together through the network.

Reporting is usually referring to Ignition's Reporting Module. In a broader scope, it means any system that can create a way to visualize historical data, either to show on the spot or to save for later.

Dynamic Reporting means creating a report once and getting new data based on user selections or pre-defined scripting.

Resources are just objects that are available for use. In Ignition, a resource can be Tags, Templates, Pipelines, components, device connections, authentication profiles, etc.

In SCADA systems, a Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) is a device installed at a remote location that collects data, codes the data into a format that is transmittable and transmits the data back to a central station, or master.

In Modbus devices, you will sometimes see 'RTU over TCP' as the connection type. This just means that TCP is used to transport data through the network, but the data being transported is using the Modbus RTU format.


A runtime is the part of Ignition that an operator can interact with. It connects to the Ignition Gateway through the network and will allow the operators to control or view anything the designer has already set up. This is a part of the Vision module and often referred to as a Client.

REpresentational State Transfer (REST) is an architectural style for developing web services. RESTful web services, provide interoperability between computer systems on the Internet.
A primary benefit of using REST is that REST-based interactions happen using constructs similar to the Internet's Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP).

A relational database management system (RDBMS) is a type of database management system that stores data in the form of related tables. Most databases in widespread use today are based on his relational database model. The relational model invented by Edgar F. Codd at IBM's San Jose Research Laboratory. The term describes a class of database systems, which at a minimum:

  • Presents the data to the user as relations (i.e. in tabular form as a collection of tables each table consisting of a set of rows and columns).
  • Provides relational operators to manipulate the data in tabular form.


Responsive Design applications and web pages will respond (change) based on the needs of the users and the device (i.e., PC, phone, tablet, etc.) they are running on. Using Ignition Perspective, you can create design and development that is responsive to the user's behavior and environment based on screen size, platform and orientation.

RGB (red, green, and blue) refers to a system for representing the colors to be used on a computer display. Red, green, and blue can be combined in various proportions to obtain any color in the visible spectrum. The color is specified by an RGB value, commonly expressed in either of two way. The decimal format is a comma separated string with one number for each color ranging from 0 to 255. For example, "0,255,0" represents green. The other is a Hex format starting with a # symbol and then listing two-digit values for each color, ranging from 00 to FF. For example,"#00FF00" represents green.

RGBA (Red Green Blue Alpha) color values are an extension of RGB color values. The addition of a alpha channel specifies the opacity for a color. The alpha parameter is a number between 0.0 (fully transparent) and 1.0 (fully opaque).
