A control system is a device, or set of devices, that manages, commands, directs or regulates the behavior of other devices or systems. Industrial control systems are used in industrial production for controlling equipment or machines. The majority of control systems are computer-based.

A client makes a request and the server fulfills the request. An example of a client would be an e-mail program connecting to a mail server or an Internet browser client connecting to a web server.
