Ethernet uses cables to connect devices. Many PLCs are connected through ethernet, meaning they can be connected directly to the network and the OPC server can talk to it without going through another device. A Serial to Ethernet converter (device) can be used on some older serial PLCs to make the appear on the network as a normal ethernet PLC.
