# system.vision.getSibling

> Given a component event object, looks up a sibling component.

This function replaces [system.gui.getSibling](versioned_docs/version-8.1/appendix/scripting-functions/system-gui/system-gui-getSibling.md). Any scripts containing Vision Client scoped functions that were replaced with system.vision syntax will still work to maintain backwards compatibility.

This function is used in **Python Scripting**.

## Description
Given a component event object, looks up a sibling component. Shortcut for [event.source.parent.getComponent("siblingName")](ignition-modules\vision\scripting-in-vision\component-events\component-events.md). If no such sibling is found, the special value None is returned.

## Client Permission Restrictions
This scripting function has no [Client Permission](../../../ignition-modules/vision/vision-project-properties/vision-project-properties.md#vision-permissions-properties) restrictions.

## Syntax
`system.vision.getSibling(event, name)`

### Parameters
Type | Parameter | Description 
------- | ------- | ------
EventObject| `event` | A component event object.
String| `name` | The name of the sibling component.

### Returns
**VisionComponent** - Returns reference to the sibling component. See [VisionComponent](https://sdk.inductiveautomation.com/javadoc/ignition83/latest/com/inductiveautomation/vision/api/client/components/model/VisionComponent.html).
