# toStr

> Identical to the toString expression function.

**This function is used by Ignition's Expression language**.

## Description

Identical to the [toString](toString.md) expression function.

## Syntax

`toStr(value, [failover])`

### Parameters

| Type | Parameter | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Object | `value` | The value to type cast, typically a DataSet or PyDataSet. |
| Object | `failover` | The failover value if type casting fails. [optional] |

### Results

**String** - The value type cast as a string.

## Examples

```python title="Code Snippet"
toStr(1/3.0) // returns "0.3333333333333333"
```

```python title="Code Snippet"
toStr({Root Container.Table.data}) //returns something like: "Dataset [150R x 3C]"
```
